Word Counter

Count characters, words and paragraphs in your text.

Paste your text and run the count. Read the separate character, Han character, Latin word/number and paragraph totals rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Up to 100,000 UTF-16 units; some emoji use multiple units

How to use

Which text count are you checking?

A character limit, a Latin-word count and a paragraph count measure different things. This counter separates visible non-whitespace characters, Han characters, Latin words/numbers and paragraphs so you can compare the appropriate number with your destination's rule.

Step by step

  1. Paste the complete draft, preserving blank lines if you want a paragraph count.
  2. Choose Count words and read the four results separately. The Latin-word count is not a segmentation count for every language.
  3. Compare with the receiving form's own counter before submission. Keep that form's rules when they count spaces or emoji differently.

Choosing the settings

OptionWhat changes
Visible charactersWhitespace is excluded; punctuation and a joined emoji sequence are included. This count differs from UTF-8 bytes or JavaScript string length.
Han / Latin words and numbersHan characters are counted separately. Latin-letter and number runs form words; a supported apostrophe or hyphen can stay within a word.
ParagraphsA blank line separates paragraphs. A single line break inside a paragraph does not create another paragraph.

Example and expected result

Use Hello world, then a blank line, then 你好 followed by a space and 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦. Expected: 13 visible non-whitespace characters, 2 Han characters, 2 Latin words and 2 paragraphs. The family emoji contributes one visible character even though its stored representation uses several code units.

If it is not working

  • The shared input cap is 100,000 UTF-16 code units, not 100,000 visible characters. Split a larger draft into meaningful parts when the tool rejects it.
  • If paragraph counts look wrong, check for blank lines. If counts differ from another editor, compare the whitespace, emoji and word rules before assuming that either counter is broken.

How to use

Paste text and select Count words. Visible characters exclude whitespace but include punctuation and emoji. Han characters and Latin words / numbers are counted separately. Blank lines separate paragraphs. Emoji sequences count as one visible character. Other editors may use different counting rules.
